"My son, Matt Davis lost his battle with cancer. To honor him, we have established the Matt Davis Foundation Sportsmanship Award to be given annually to the senior basketball or baseball player who best exemplifies the qualities and standards by which Matt lived. So, if you will indulge me for a moment, I would like to tell you a little bit about my son, allowing me at the same time to set the slate for the criteria necessary to achieve this award."

The Matt Davis Foundation is a Richmond based nonprofit organization created to sustain the Matt Davis Award (an annual scholarship awarded to Douglas Southall Freeman High School senior student-athletes) and to support groups that provide invaluable comfort and aid to cancer patients and their families while also supporting facilities dedicated to cancer research.
